What is Symlin?
Symlin is for both type 1 and 2.
Islets excrete both insulin and symlin.

Using both insulin and symlin may benefit us better than insulin alone. Byetta stimulates beta cells to function. If some of us don't have enough good beta cells, symlin may be a good choice.

What is pramlintide

Brand name in US: Symlin

Class: synthetic analog of the human hormone amylin

For: both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes

Route of Administration: injections before meals.

Action: lowers blood sugar; used together with insulin.

manufacturer: Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Status: Approved by FDA, March 2005; to be available in next few months.
