Medtronic Gets OK for Insulin Pump with Glucose Monitor
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Medical device maker Medtronic Inc. on Thursday said it had received regulatory approval for an insulin pump with a continuous glucose monitoring system for treating insulin-dependent diabetes.
The device, known as the Minimed Paradigm Real Time System, relays glucose readings every five minutes from a glucose sensor to the pump.
The sensor sounds an alarm or vibrator when blood glucose levels are too low or too high and it makes a recommendation on how much insulin to take if blood sugar is too high. The patient then double checks the reading with a finger stick test before administering the insulin.
Medtronic said this would help patients take immediate action to maintain healthy glucose levels and delay or prevent diabetes- related complications.
