August 12, 2005

This diabetes education project, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), was charged with developing a multimedia approach to diabetes education and intervention training that is sensitive to the cultural and self-management needs of African-American women. Gathered from participants in Medstar's Diabetes for Life support group at the D.C. Public Library and New Endeavors, a transitional program for women, data include results from the Short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (STOFHLA) as well as end users' reflections on the program's accessibility and application to their personal diabetes self-management efforts. This evaluation will include a control group and compare pre- and post-data from the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) and the Diabetes Self- Efficacy Scale (DSES). During the one-hour workshop diabetes educators will have the opportunity to examine multimedia-enhanced activities that build client knowledge and help them to develop and apply decision-making skills for their diabetes self-care.
